Work With Mary:

About Me

Meet Mary

I am a multiple award winner, a voice for the voice voiceless, and a catalyst for change. I champion, advocate and lobby for decent work, decent pay, economic growth, and human rights for those at the bottom of the pyramid.

My Story

Professional Profile

Mary Thuo is a value-driven entrepreneur, mentor and author based in Nairobi, Kenya. She has carved her path as a voice for the voiceless and a catalyst for change, focusing on the 4Ps: Purpose, Planet, People and Prosperity. At a more granular level, she champions, advocates and lobbies for sustainable development, decent pay, human rights, and economic growth for the less fortunate in society.

Her journey in entrepreneurship started way back in 2004 when she founded a beauty salon— Talk of The Town Executive Salon and Barber Shop. Starting as a side hustle, the venture turned out to be quite successful and before long, Mary resigned to fully focus on entrepreneurship. After spending 10 years in the industry, she sold the business and established a cleaning business, Cityscape Trends Services Limited, where she currently serves as the founder and chief executive officer.

As a business leader and a multiple award winner, she has been rethinking the role of business in society through championing the sustainable development goals to address the world’s biggest, most pressing humanitarian challenges worth solving for the most vulnerable and marginalized communities. Under her leadership and guidance, Cityscape Trends is a signatory to the United Nations Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs).

With a workforce of 250 sanitation consultants, the majority of whom originate from marginalized communities in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Thika, Machakos and Kisii. She guides, inspires, encourages, empowers, and transforms lives and livelihoods through determined efforts to eradicate poverty through business collaborations for the greater good.

My Approach

Social Service Through Partnerships

I am motivated to create a positive change through creative partnerships and innovations that transform social, economic, and environmental impacts at the workplace and community levels.

The Fundamentals

My Service Purpose

In life, there must be a root for the cause of action. It could be an emotion, a goal, a target or even a past occurrence and experience. The reasons are many.  But equity and equality are the two primaries that have built Mary Thuo and who I am.

I stand for truth and justice; fairness and integrity; love and compassion; hard work and perseverance and unity and kindness. These have been the cords that have kept me firm on my journey, have been my back to lean on, and have provided the ultimate guide in my service to humanity.

To build a sustainable, socially, economically, and even politically stable, just, and holistic society through collaborative work.

To leave the world a better place than I found it, by living consciously without depleting the natural resources, and living organisms for the sake of future generations.

Be the change that you want to see. It first starts within me and only with a changed mindset and opened senses can I see something, say something, and do something.

The Origins

Story of My Life

I, Mary Wanja Thuo, was born on the plains of the country Kenya, to humble parents. I was raised and spent my childhood days frolicking in the green grasses of the countryside, fetching water and breaking firewood with knees as a norm.

However, things took a turn for the worst when we lost our dad. Left under the care of my mother, life got tough. School fees and food become a huge problem. Despite the challenges, I soldiered on and with the Lord’s grace, I managed to clear my primary and secondary educational levels.

Since I could not afford college fees, I travelled to Nairobi to look for employment. Luckily or unluckily depending on how you see it, I landed an opportunity as an interning waitress at Safari Hotel in Samburu. After about 15 months of unpaid internships, I got my first real job.

Later, I served as a waitress, receptionist and general manager within various hotels and institutions in the hospitality industry while learning and unlearning. Having spent several years in employment, I decided to venture into entrepreneurship.

Currently, I run Cityscape Trends Services Limited as its Managing Director. And it is through this that I have got to further widen my scope and understanding of social and economic issues. From these many few words, do feel inspired today. Work hard, persevere, persist and in faith, pray. All will work out. Even if not now, it eventually will.
